Thou shalt not…tweet?

August 30, 2010

Thou shalt not commit murder.  Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbors wife.  Thou shalt not tweet in church.

Say what?

Quick question-WWJD? :-)

Mat 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations

Mar 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Mar 6:11 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for that city.

Wait a minute.

That sounds like Christians are supposed to let everyone they know or even come  across about God. They should be overwhelmed and filled with joy at the very thought of being able to spread the word of God wherever they can.  In the time of Jesus he walked from town to town and spread the word.  People told their friends, who rode on the backs of animals to tell their friends.  For thousands of years Christians have been trying to spread the word of God.  When your buddy has a bad day many of you will quote scripture.  Tough situation?  Read your Bible.  Some people just can’t hold it in–they’ll tell you about the love of Jesus while you’re sitting in the next stall in a public restroom.  Twitter though?

Some people seem to be of the mindset that it’s wrong to tweet from church.  Maybe they think it’s disrespectful.  Maybe they just don’t want to hear it.  Whatever the reason, some people are against it.

When you hear a good sermon at church do you leave and tell your friends about it?  When you disagree with your preacher’s thinking on a scripture do you elbow your neighbor and snicker or write notes? Do you sit and hold conversations with people about what you heard?  Chances are if you go to church you do.  Well, who’s to say that just because people are online friends (versus ones you’ve actually met) are any different?  Why wouldn’t you as a Christian want to share what you are learning with anyone you know?

Many of you share things.  You share your lives on your blogs, with your friends, on facebook, Myspace, and Twitter.  When it comes to Jesus suddenly there’s a right and wrong way to do it? You can approach me on a street corner, in a restroom, in the grocery store or when I’m broken down on the side of the road…but not on twitter? Sermons and religious services (and concerts) are podcasted, put on YouTube and broadcast the world over…but it’s rude to share what you’re learning as it happens? I think not.

Jesus didn’t say “Go forth and be timid”.  I don’t remember anything in the Bible about there being a right and wrong time to share the word of God.  Many times people I know simply feel led to let others know about God…and the timing isn’t always the best for them. Maybe they’re shy.  Maybe it’s sharing with an unbeliever.  You know what though?  I don’t think God chooses weak people to share his word.  He chooses the ones who aren’t afraid to be politically incorrect or stir up a little dust. If you think about it what Jesus did wasn’t exactly conventional in his time.  Who’s to say that in a digital age you shouldn’t share things as they happen with the technology we’re given?  I’m sure that not everyone on twitter goes to church.  Maybe, just maybe they might need to hear what’s being said.

Who’s to judge?

Not you.

Not me.

There’s only one who’s equipped for that job.

What do you think?

This was sparked by a discussion I had recently with @SugarJones and @RealLifeSarah.  @SugarJones was being chastised for tweeting from church.  What do you think?  To tweet or not to tweet?

I remember once in church our pastor asked us to email someone about something he was saying at that time. Twitter will be next for him. I’m sure of it!

That’s awesome! That’s a pastor that is living in the digital age/world lol.

Personally, I think it’s disrespectful to the pastor and those around you. It’s hard enough to concentrate on the sermon with people coughing, kids babbling, babies crying, etc. I would totally be distracted by someone tweeting next to me. At church, if someone’s cell phone rings, oh my, not a good thing! LOL It’s as if we all turn and look at once. hahaha

In regards to the pastor, I find that they put a lot of time and prayer into their message and for someone to be tweeting during the service is just disrespectful. Take notes and tweet them when you get done with church. Go out to the lobby if you feel like you’ve just heard the most mindblowing statement ever.

I mean, we’re only there 1 – 1 1/2 hours. I think tweeting can wait…unless the pastor asks you to tweet. =)

This is all just my humble opinion. Besides if I saw someone tweeting, I’d probably ask them to let me use their phone to update my facebook status.

Well said Mimi! I totally understand your point of view. As I said to someone on twitter; I don’t personally do it (and if I did I’d turn my ringer/sound off), but I’m not going to judge others for doing it. It really depends on the situation (IMO). Some pastors are up to date with the technology-and encourage it. If your pastor knows about it and doesn’t find an issue with it then who am I to say something about it?

I agree that they put a lot of time & prayer into their messages (for the most part). Here again-maybe it’s something that should be discussed with your pastor. Each will see things differently I’m sure! Someone else on twitter pointed out that it’s kind of like taking notes-publicly. Another said it sounded like a good way to witness to people. Our pastor knows you can view the Bible on your phone and all kinds of stuff-so he doesn’t necessarily encourage it, but he doesn’t discourage it either.

I love the feedback-and I’m open to all opinions. Opinions are just that-people’s thoughts and beliefs. When people can speak their minds (and don’t necessarily agree) it’s an awesome thing!!

I tweet from church… but not in the context you post about. However, I’m sure my pastor would be fine with it. I’m not so sure about some of my church family. My pastor knows that I use my iPhone during church… to look up things during the sermon… catch a different translation of a bible verse and such. The way I tweet is I ask my twitter friends how I and my church family may pray for them. Then right before the prayer time I check my tweets… these tweets and DMs get added to the assembly for prayers. It is such a small thing… a simple tweet… but the power of prayer is a huge thing.

My faith is an integral part of who I am, and it will show through on my social media. I don’t tweet from church, but only because my phone is not capable.

I say Tweet in the car or on your way out; tweeting IN church is distracting to others and not at all necessary. If people don’t want to read tweets about God, they can just stop following the person doing it. That said, I like a variety of tweets; they don’t bother me in the least.

I had never thought about it like this. Puts technology and tweeting in a new light for me. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I think it is okay to tweet after church or in between services but not during the service. Sometimes, I will share things from church on my blog or even on Twitter occasionally; however, certainly not during the service. It can wait.

Interesting post! At first I thought you were being sarcastic. It seems that people can’t go anywhere without texting. Church is your time with God and your community. If you so feel the need, bring a pad and paper with you and spread the Word after the service ends!

I rarely tweet – haven’t gotten the hang of it – but I just can’t imagine checking email, reading FB or tweeting from my church pew.

It’s an interesting subject though!

Interesting, never thought there’s a need to tweet in church…
If I’d go to church or whatever place to look for peace and possibility for quiet surrounding mobile or any kind of ‘tech’ noise would be really annoying…

Is it so difficult to enjoy the moment that even in church it’s difficult to just be… ?

Interesting… I have no issue with it! I can see where others would. But I don’t find it distracting or rude for someone to be taking notes. So why would I find it rude or distracting if someone is using technology instead of pen and paper? It’s not my job to assume what they are writing on a piece of paper or what they are typing on their phone. Could be a grocery list, could be a call to come to worship- who knows?

I do use Foursquare and I do check into church when I remember to… I really like the idea of tweeting for prayer requests.

Interesting. I’ve never actually considered tweeting (or even texting or anything else) from church… but then I don’t do a lot of tweeting anyway. But no, I wouldn’t tweet while in church simply because I am a note taker. When I’m listening to a sermon, I write down the key points of the sermon and how they pertain to my life. It’s a learning experience… I’m not just there to worship, I’m there to learn also. Tweeting in church would be like tweeting in school, IMHO… and we all know the kids aren’t allowed, so why should we be? And, if we did, what kind of example would we be setting to the kids who are ALWAYS watching what we do? It’s not so much that I think it’s disrespectful to the pastor either… it’s more disrespectful to God because it is, after all, His house… and can’t we put our socializing on hold long enough to learn and worship Him? But at any rate, it’s a personal choice. If we are led by the Spirit to tweet something the pastor has said, then by all means tweet away!!

Like I said before, I don’t do it, but I’m not going to judge others for it. I’m with you-if you truly feel led by the spirit to tweet something out-by all means-do it!! If you’re just tweeting to tweet and be a social butterfly-I don’t think I could agree with that. ;-)
