Socially Savvy Parents on Twitter

August 24, 2010

Are you a “socially savvy” parent?  Do you know what Twitter is? Do you know how to use it?  Even more important though-do your kiddos/tweens/teens know how to use it?

Online safety is a big concern for most parents.  They put blocks on their computers or internet programs to block out objectionable content.  They go to all kinds of lengths to be sure that their kiddos are safe.  Kiddos these days are wanting facebook and twitter accounts at younger and younger ages.  The only thing with Twitter is that your kiddo’s tweets are out there for the world to see.

My biggest suggestion for setting up a twitter account for those under 18 (or just under your roof!) is to PROTECT THEIR TWEETS! Kids don’t always consider the fact that when they tweet they are leaving ” ___ Middle School” it’s out there for anyone in the timeline to read.  I imagine that twitter is prime breeding grounds for predators .  When setting up a twitter account follow the following tutorial to “protect your tweets” (or those of your kiddos).   This will ensure that only people your child allows to see their tweets will see them. Click the images to make them larger.

Twitter Settings

At the top right of the screen (once you log in) click "settings"

Protect Your Kids

Check the box next to "Protect My Tweets" and then click "Save". Also be sure that the box for "add location to my tweets" is UNCHECKED. See below for details.

My second tip:  Be their friend! If you aren’t in their “trusted” friends YOU won’t know what they are saying!!  By being their friend you can monitor their activities and talk about anything that concerns you.

Third tip:  Be sure the location is OFF on their tweets. You don’t want people being able to see exactly where your kiddos are at any given time.  See the above pictures for how to make sure it’s off.

Last tip:  Check out their friends! I know this takes a bit more effort but take the time to go through and see who your kiddos’ twitter friends are.  Go through their profiles and see what they are tweeting.  Be their friends.  If you don’t tweet often they will probably just forget you’re there at all. You will still be able to see what’s going on and keep up to date on things kiddos tell their friends (but not necessarily their parents)!

Thankfully, my kids are still too young for twitter, but I’m sure they would know more tricks than I do. :O)

WOW! Excellent points Kristen!!! My grand-tween has no interest in twitter at the moment, for which I’m glad, but I’ll keep these in mind if she starts in. I second Melinda’s comment, VERY valuable info for parents as well as all us granny nannies and pappies. :)

You’re right Kaye! You know-many times I don’t think about the grannies, pappies, aunts and uncles raising kiddos. Thank you for reminding me!!

Ugh. My 12 year old wants a facebook and I’m saying no. The idea of her on twitter, and other kiddos too, is weird. But the nice thing is when we are their “friends” or followers, we know what’s going on!

Thanks for the great advice, Kristen! And I owe you a phone call!

Yes, my 10 year old just asked for one and we’re debating it…I’m thinking it’s probably a big no lol. I don’t want him to be an outcast but I do want him to be safe. If we do get him a facebook you can bet it will all be private and I’ll be in his friends.

I wish more parents would be involved in theirs child’s “social circles”. It’s so important. Thanks for sharing these tips. Knowledge truly is power.

P.S. Thanks for stopping by my blog. Sorry it took me so long to drop by your place! I look forward to hearing from you again!

You’re so right! Yes, it’s very important to be involved. Many parents get involved in their kiddos’ school functions, sports, etc., but then leave things like facebook and twitter totally open-ended. THAT is where kiddos get in trouble!! Glad you stopped by!

This has been a big topic of conversation around our house lately, as both of my teens want to start blogs. My oldest wants to start one as a means to document a year-long school project she must do, and my thirteen-year-old wants to start a teen fashion blog now that she’s found that there are teenage bloggers going to the same fashion shows as Anna Wintour and getting the same respect as adult bloggers. While I’m pleased that they have great, creative ideas for their blogs, I am so concerned for their online safety.

I think what we’ll be doing is setting their twitter accounts to private, so that each person who wants to be a friend on twitter must get permission to be one. And I’ve told them I must have their username and passwords, and must be able to access their accounts at all times, not to violate their privacy, but because they are minors and I am responsible for their safety. We’re going to proceed, but very, very cautiously.

It sounds like you’re being very open minded and thinking this through too! I think that’s all you can do. It’s good that you’re open minded though, your kiddos probably don’t know how lucky they are! ;-)

Such agreat advice – I am nowhere near thinking about this since my kids are so small, but I know online privacy and safety will be something to consider as they get older!

And welcome to TMC mama! I’m really glad you joined us! :)

My kiddos are still relatively young for this as well (my eldest is 10), but it is something to think about! I know many people out there have kiddos that want or have twitter accounts as well as facebook accounts and this could apply to both!

Happy to join TMC!! Learning to suck it up was the hardest part-from there it was easy. I’ve found blogs I didn’t know existed lol!
