Want twitter followers? Showcase yourself!{Tweet Me Tuesday}

July 27, 2010

So-you want more twitter followers?  Do you want followers who are relevant to you and what you are doing? You want to know how to get them?

C’mere.

Little Closer.

Just a smidge closer.  Let me whisper in your ear.

Put your best face on. Much of it is just that simple. Should I explain?

You know how people say “You shouldn’t judge a book by its cover”?  You know how (many times) you do anyway?  Same principle applies here.  If I look at your profile and all I see is that boring little bird I’m probably not going to follow you. If I look and your picture is some kind of logo then I’ll think twice-especially if you aren’t a well-known company.  Thinking twice on twitter means I move onto profile information.

Use your “Bio” space to make a statement. Whatever statement you want to make-that is the place to do it.  Here again-if your bio is blank or just contains a link to a site-I probably won’t follow you.  If you have no picture and no bio-you can pretty much forget me (and many other twitter users) following you.  Taking the time to put a real picture and some kind of statement shows that you aren’t (usually) there to spam me with irrelevant links.  It means you want me to get to know you better and that you took 5 minutes to fill this section out.

Don’t just take my word for it though-ask other tweeps (people on twitter) their opinion.  Chances are though if you have no pic and no bio you won’t get a response.  Take a hint.  ;-)

I’m going to give you examples of bios that make a statement. These bios tell you SOMETHING about who is behind the tweets. This is my opinion only so do with it what you will.

and mine: (oh c’mon-you knew I was throwing it in there!) Believing the unbelievable. Learning how to best help others and trust myself. I’ve got big plans and an even bigger God. Wife, mom, social media enthusiast (@mamabytes)

My picture?  It’s me-with my pink wig on.  I hope that it grabs people’s attention.  That’s kind of the point.  I want to stand out.  Don’t you? {No-you don’t have to have pink hair-but don’t be afraid to be a little different.  No matter what you do it’s always nice to see a face.}

Twitter is a great tool for getting to know people better and for conversations you can’t have on a blog/website.  Like it or not-your bio and picture are the closest thing you have to a first impression on twitter and don’t we all like to make good first impressions?

very very good point. I think hit helps to change your profile pic once in a while too, something I haven’t done lately. Thanks for the reminder.

Excellent points, all. It’s so vital to get some kind of different photo. Otherwise people may think you’re either brand new or an irritating spammer. Thanks for another great TweetMeTuesday – now I’m off to read yesterday’s post as my senior mom lives in her Crocs. :)

Eh–you don’t have to make it newsworthy–just think about profiles/bios you like to read and what you look for when you follow people!! Thanks for stopping by!
