Changing Your Twitter Name {Tweet Me Tuesday}

July 13, 2010

Yeah…I said it.  You can change your Twitter name if one day you wake up and decide it just isn’t for you any more.  How about them apples?! ;-)

OK, so-I didn’t even know about it until @lindatweetsalot told me lol.  She changed her name and I noticed and asked about it.  For me the logical assumption was that you just couldn’t do that!! I do advise that if you’re going to change your name you tweet first (and afterward) to let people know.  Not everyone will see it-but it helps a little.  I also advise you not to change your picture right away.  Many people will scan by picture and if you come up in their stream with an unfamiliar name AND picture you may find yourself being removed from the list of people they are following! I also took the precaution of putting “formerly @handshouseheart” in my profile for now.  That way if someone looks and doesn’t know who I am it gives them a clue as to how I got in their stream!

Now-on to the “tutorial”.  As always click to make the pictures bigger.

Click "Settings" at the top right of your screen.

You may have to re-enter your password. They may also send you an e-mail to confirm the changes.

If they send you an e-mail to confirm be sure you confirm your changes!! It’s as easy as that!  Works well if you’re changing the direction/rebranding or started out using your full name and want to start using something else.

I’ve never done it, but this one I did know. It always amazes me when people start their accounts over instead of just changing names. They don’t have to and I feel bad!

I did this awhile back, and followed this advice. It worked out well — seemed like everyone got the message within a week.

I actually did know this. But is sad that I know most of the people (like you) more by their avatars?

Way back when I changed my blog name and in doing so opened up a new Twitter account and wasn’t sure how to transfer all my old followers so I just went through and followed them under the new Twitter name. This would have been so much easier! Great tutorial!

lol I changed mine several times when I first got my Twitter account in 2008 and still ended up with going back to my name. Bad thing was, by the time I decided I didn’t want something cutesy, someone ELSE was using my name and I had to use my name w/ my middle initial LOL I should have just kept it while I had it the first time. *sigh*

I did this quite some time ago and messed it up bad, it locked me out of my account and I had a heck of a time trying to create a new one! I still have that rouge account floating around and still can’t get into it lol! I think it was user error though :)
