What’s a hashtag? Tweet Me Tuesday

April 13, 2010

OK, if you’re new to twitter you probably don’t know what a twitter hashtag is.  This is one of the things that makes twitter rather confusing when you first start using it.

A hashtag (generally) is a way that people find each other.  For example, right now I’m participating in the “Ultimate Blog Party 2010″.  In order for everyone on twitter to be able to find each other that is also participating in this virtual party, a “hashtag” has been created.  This hashtag is #ubp10.  When I “tweet” something I add this hashtag if I want it to be easily seen by other members of the party.  For instance I may tweet

“I’m off to visit @Dayngr for the #ubp10.  Who should I visit next?”

and if someone looking wanted me to visit them they could find that easily and “tweet” me back an answer!  Essentially a hashtag is the pound symbol (#) and whatever you’d like to say.

Sometimes hashtags are also used to create emphasis.  {The English language is pretty confusing-why shouldn’t twitter be? ;-) } For instance someone may say

I just locked my keys in the car #mommybrainmoment

It doesn’t mean they are trying to necessarily find other people saying that…they are stating that they had a “mommy-brain moment” (a moment of forgetfulness).

That’s it for this edition of Tweet Me Tuesday.  Want to participate?  Here’s how:

  • Check out Melinda’s Blog. She’s the one who came up with TMT and I love it…just hoping it gets off the ground! ;-)
  • Tweet this post!
  • Link up a post you’d like Tweeted using the MckLinky below. It can either be your most recent post or an older, favorite post you’d like to share with a new audience. You only have to put the link to your post at one of our blogs–we are both showing the same exact links. Link up here or there…and grab a button at either place as well!
  • Follow Melinda and myself on Twitter! (if you’re not already)
  • Visit the links below and try to Tweet at least five posts (linked below).
  • Follow as many of these bloggers as you’d like on Twitter. (You can follow their blogs, too.)

This was very, very informative. It took me weeks on Twitter to figure out how to use hashtags. Thanks. I am a fellow blogger, and I support all bloggers!

Hey Kristen! Your hashtag post was great! I’m still trying to figure out those darn things! ;0)

Thanks for fixing my link … can you tell I’m a bit distracted these days?? I emailed Brent at Linky Tools last night about my glitch. He said I was doing everything right, so it must have just been a fluke. And he ended up following my blog! ;0)

Thank you for this. I’m always a bit confused on when and why to use the #. Maybe now I’ll get it right :-)
